15 minutes before the scheduled press conference in New Orleans, NFL Network Ian Rapaport tweeted that Sean Payton will stay in New Orleans as head coach.
It was wildly speculated that Payton would seek to leave to another organization such as the Colts, Giants, or 49ers, but it turns out that will not be the case.
The news is expected to be confirmed at today’s 2pm press conference.
Payton has been the head coach of the Saints since 2006 and has had an 87-57 record including 5 playoff appearances, 3 division titles, and 1 Super Bowl championship.
However, it is unclear whether he signed a contract extension in New Orleans, so we could very well be revisiting this entire conversation in 2 years when his current contract is up. And if he hasn’t signed a contract extension by then, I would expect his tenure in New Orleans to be up, especially since it will likely be the end of Drew Brees’s NFL career as well.
